Here you can easily observe huge (7m long) whale sharks along with numerous other fish of many sizes and shapes as they swim and glide about in our large tank. The acrylic window is 8.2 m high, 22.5 m wide, and 60 cm thick, the biggest in the world at present, providing you with a breathtaking view of the tank in its entirety. An Unprecedented Challenge - Breeding Whale Sharks

Breeding whale sharks in captivity had long been considered impossible because of their enormous size. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium took a big step forward into accomplishing this goal by successfully housing several whale sharks in one tank for the first time in the world. This is an unprecedented challenge into unraveling the ecology of whale sharks.

The elegant gliding of schooling manta rays (Manta birostris), the largest of all the rays, can only be seen in captivity here at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. The giant tank and the constant supply of fresh seawater have created an excellent environment, allowing visitors to see this spectacular exhibition, the only one in the world.

The corals of Okinawa are the gift of the Kuroshio (Black Current). We have recreated their habitat here and are taking initiatives to breed them for eventual release into the sea. Venture into the Unknown - Okinawa's Deep Sea Recreated Here

Much of the deep sea, like outer space, is still veiled in secrecy. Okinawa's deep sea is no exception. Our challenge is to breed the creatures of the deep sea (snapper, black snoek, luminous shrimp, among others), so far never achieved successfully in captivity anywhere else in the world.
